Care & installation

Vinyl wallcoverings demand precision in application and maintenance to ensure longevity and visual integrity. This guide outlines essential steps for installation and care, tailored to the material’s unique properties and the standards of curated ateliers like Studio Castel.

Substrate Preparation

The foundation of any vinyl installation is a clean, dry, and stable surface. Ensure the wall is free of dust, grease, and loose particles. For new drywall, allow full curing before application. If the surface is porous, apply a water-based primer to prevent absorption of adhesive. Avoid substrates with high moisture content or those prone to expansion/contraction, as these can compromise adhesion over time. Use a level to identify and correct any irregularities prior to installation.

Paste Type and Application

Use a high-quality, pH-neutral paste specifically formulated for vinyl. Avoid pastes containing fillers or accelerators, which can degrade the material’s surface. Apply paste evenly using a 3- to 4-inch notched trowel, ensuring full coverage without over-saturation. Work in sections no larger than 3 feet to maintain control during placement. Press the vinyl firmly into the paste, smoothing from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles and wrinkles. Trim excess material at the edges with a utility knife before the paste dries.

Seam Handling

Seams should be aligned with minimal overlap, typically 1 to 2 inches, to allow for natural expansion and contraction. Use a seam roller with a smooth, non-abrasive surface to press seams flat. For seams requiring reinforcement, apply a thin layer of paste to the back of the vinyl and press firmly. Avoid stretching the material during alignment, as this can cause distortion. If seams are visible, use a seam tape designed for vinyl to blend the join seamlessly.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning requires a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, neutral pH cleaner diluted in water. Wipe surfaces in a single direction to avoid streaking. For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive sponge and a solution of water and mild soap, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive tools, which can damage the surface. Dry immediately after cleaning to prevent water spots or residue buildup.

Light Exposure and Environmental Factors

Direct sunlight can cause discoloration over time, even in UV-resistant vinyl. Install window treatments or use UV-filtering films to mitigate exposure. Maintain indoor humidity between 30% and 50% to prevent warping or cracking. Avoid areas with high heat, such as near radiators or fireplaces, which can accelerate material degradation. Ensure proper ventilation to reduce condensation risks.

Expected Lifespan and Long-Term Care

With proper installation and maintenance, vinyl wallcoverings can last 10 to 15 years. Regular inspections for wear, lifting, or peeling are crucial. Reapply paste to seams or edges as needed, and replace sections showing significant damage. Avoid using heavy objects on the surface, and do not attempt to repair punctures or tears with adhesives—consult a professional for replacements. Store spare samples in a cool, dry place to preserve their integrity for future reference.
